Master Sergeant Bryan Beers, E7 and Airman Leadership School Commandant, started his military career—believe it or not—focusing on building structures or “…anything that goes vertical.” His background in construction led him to joining the military on March 4, 1998.

Since his induction into the Air Force, Sergeant Beers has been stationed at four locations, two of which were in Korea and Germany, and underwent three deployments, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom.

As a result of his construction and military experience, Sergeant Beers was hired as a part of a special duty assignment to be an instructor for the Airman Leadership School located in Hampton Roads. Beers gained rank and moved up to be the Commandant of the program that graduates 70+ airmen students, seven times a year.

In October of 2015, Sergeant Beers first learned of the USO non-profit organization primarily because of its office’s proximity to the Airman Leadership School he still works at. Introducing himself to the staff of the USO organization blossomed a relationship between the USO and local Airmen.

Students of the Airman Leadership School benefit from a program sponsored by the USO and ADS, called Tickets for Troops by Old Dominion University. This program extends the opportunity for active duty or retired military to attend the Military Appreciation Games at ODU for free.

“I’m very proud ADS has selected my family. We were the inaugural Ticket for Troops family,” he said.

Sergeant Beers was present at the November 5th Old Dominion University Military Appreciation Game with his two children, ages 6 and 10, when he was randomly selected by the USO and ADS to be the winner for a Tickets For Troops prize package.

It was their first ODU home game and the kids’ first in-person football game. He won two ADS Fitbits, a barbecue gift basket, and a gift card to Mission BBQ. He plans on giving the Fitbits to his children and taking taking his wife out on a date night.

I am really humbled by this experience. I didn’t expect to receive a gift. All I was expecting was to hang out and watch a football game with my kids.”

As far as future plans for Sergeant Beers and his family, he plans on retiring in the near future and attending many more ODU football games!
