In today’s battlefield environment, troops are challenged to compromise with the need for ever-increasing squad-level capabilities and their ability to carry these excessive loads without critical levels of fatigue and injury. As a powerful and versatile platform, the Silent Tactical Energy Enhanced Dismount (STEED) is an innovative solution to this well documented problem.
Developed by Hendrick Motorsports, the STEED significantly enhances the soldier and squad’s close combat lethality and human performance during dismounted operations. STEED maximizes small unit dominance through lethal payload transport, increased maneuver and mobility, rapid 1:1 casualty evacuation, and allows the soldier to arrive on objective at a lower cost of physical exertion, allowing for enhanced performance.
- Soldier Lethality and Survivability
- Casualty Evacuation
- Soldier Load and Human Performance
- Maneuver and Mobility
- Dense Urban and CBRN Environments
- Squad Expeditionary Power and Sustainment
The STEED is an all-terrain, electric payload mobility platform which is tactically silent, has zero emissions, and can carry 300 to 500 pounds payload for 15 to 30 miles over difficult terrain. The machine is manually guided by a single operator using an intuitive thumb throttle and enables the carriage of diverse payloads using a versatile load deck.

Zero turning radius, submersible.
With a zero turning radius, low curb weight and center of gravity, the platform is optimized for austere environments including dense urban and subterranean and is operable while submerged in water. STEED powers over diverse terrains including hills, forested areas, stairwells, tight passageways, over rocks and uneven rubble.
Lightweight, compact, battery powered.
The system is powered by a lightweight, changeable LiFePO4 battery pack that weights 21 pounds. The system can export power for charging a units essential electrical gear and also integrates with the squad power management pack for ease of adaptability. STEED is constructed of a durable lightweight steel alloy material and breaks down to a compact form factor for ease of transport. The platform is operable at variable speeds in both forward and reverse at 0-6.5 mph.
System Performance in Real World Scenarios:
- Reduced Mission Times: 35-64% reduction in mission times, essentially 3x faster dismounted movement
- Enhanced Soldier Performance: 60% reduction in calorie burn, less effort, lower exertion
- Sustainment and Soldier Load: 400% payload increase and reduction in metabolic rate
- Mission Effectiveness and Security Posture: 80% reduction in troop to task
- CASEVAC: 17% lower accelerations on patient, 1:1 soldier to casualty ratio for movement
- Dismounted Power: Provides small unit expeditionary power exceeding 72-hour mission
By developing an innovative solution to existing capability gaps identified by the U.S. Army and the United States Special Operations Command, Hendrick Motorsports’ STEED is significantly enhancing human performance, soldier load, and reducing injury to soldiers caused by the excessive loads they are forced to carry.
