UNMANNED SYSTEMS CAPABILITIES: A GROWING LANDSCAPE

MISSION-CAPABLE WORKHORSES FOR MARITIME FORCES

Industry leaders are continually developing more capable unmanned systems to accomplish a wide variety of tasks, from discreet reconnaissance to neutralizing CBRNe threats. Unmanned missions have increased during the past decade, spurring users to incorporate unmanned systems into non-traditional facets of their operations—logistics, maintenance and repair, and transportation. The DOD is already projecting an increase in time, resources, strategic initiatives, goals, and planned expenditures related to unmanned systems.

Autonomous Underwater Vehicles (AUVs) and Remotely Operated Vehicles (ROVs) are utilized to locate, and identify mines, as well as other unexploded ordnance over large areas of open water. Deployed AUVs utilize side-scan SONAR to hunt for suspicious objects. Once a target is identified, the AUV data is uploaded to an ROV, which is piloted to the target for positive identification and inspection via real-time, high-definition video. Semi-autonomous mine disposal systems are designed to destroy mines with a built-in, large caliber-shaped charge.

Remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) are tethered via an umbilical and controlled from the surface, providing real-time feedback to the operator. The SeaBotix vLBV300 is an exciting approach to small yet highly capable inspection ROV systems, weighing only 40lbs in air with various payload packages available.

Hydroid’s REMUS 600 AUV

Hydroid’s REMUS 600 AUV was designed to support the Navy’s growing need for operations requiring extended endurance, increased payload capacity, and greater operating depth. The positively buoyant, highly versatile system operates in depths of 600 meters but can be ordered and configured for 1500-meter operations.

Hydroid’s REMUS M3V (Mircro 300 Meter Rated Vehicle)

Hydroid’s REMUS M3V (Mircro 300 Meter Rated Vehicle) is a compact one-man portable autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) that can dive up to 300 meters in depth. Low cost and ready to use right out of the box, this micro AUV supports numerous applications including search and survey, intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance
(ISR), marine research, and multi-vehicle missions.
