Jasmine Jones’s career journey is a lesson in perseverance and making the most of your opportunities

When Jasmine Jones graduated from Old Dominion with a degree in international studies, her dream was to take her love of travel and politics and translate it into a career abroad. However, her career journey took her in a different direction.

Instead of going abroad, she turned her part-time college gig at TJ Maxx into a full time job in the Loss Prevention Department, starting her working career as a small girl standing up to some pretty big shoplifters.

She learned to command a presence and got to know the Virginia Beach police well. Eventually, she was inspired to enroll in the Police Academy and become a sworn Virginia Beach police officer. It was a job she truly enjoyed, but ultimately, not something she decided to make her long-term career.

When a relative told her about an opportunity at ADS, she jumped at it. A global company? An energetic workplace? And helping the military? The girl with the international studies degree and a family full of Navy veterans was in.

Today, she’s an Inside Account Manager – Air Force, Southeast, at ADS. It’s a job she loves more than she ever expected, working closely with ADS outside sales reps to sustain and grow important client sales relationships.

"It’s very challenging, and I love a challenge"

While thankful that her role no longer requires apprehending any big, bad guys, it does involve some pretty big responsibilities. A pretty big learning curve, too.

“They use a lot of acronyms here,” she says with a laugh, “so don’t be afraid to ask.”

The really wonderful thing, she said, is the amount of support new employees at ADS receive.

“It’s such a good atmosphere here,” she said. “I have a very supportive manager, Lauren Eyre, who I go to for everything. And there are so many people here that take you under their wing and want you to do really, really well.”

Who’s a good fit for ADS? In Jasmine’s view, it’s anyone who’s driven and loves seeing results from their work. “You have to be organized, passionate about the details, love providing great customer service and have a great attitude,” she said.

What’s especially rewarding to Jasmine is that the job centers on helping the U.S. military. Given today’s state of global affairs and changing missions, she’s proud to play a role in getting things right.

"It definitely motivates me to get our clients everything they need in a timely manner, and I’m honored to do it."

One thing Jasmine is still getting used to, however, are those company Happy Hours. “People here really like to mingle,” she says, and that just didn’t happen at her other career stops.

Considering Jasmine’s dogged perseverance and the career journey that brought her to ADS, maybe a chance to clink her glass isn’t such a bad idea at all.

Cheers, Jasmine. Welcome to the team.
