BEACH COMPANY POWERS MORALE, EMPLOYEE GROWTH WITH INNOVATIVE NEW APPROACH

Virginia Beach, Va. – When you think about it, employees at Virginia Beach defense contractor ADS, Inc. were already having a pretty great year.

First, came the gasp-inducing announcement about fully paid employer health insurance. Next, a new program offering all employees a paid day off for volunteering in the community. Then, flexible 8-hour days that can start at 7, 8 or 9 a.m.

Now, the beach-based defense contractor has taken things a step further, hoping to show employees just how much it cares. ADS recently hired its first Employee Engagement Manager, a position whose sole purpose is to keep employees happy, healthy and fully engaged in the company’s mission to supply gear and equipment to U.S. military troops and first responders across the globe.

 “In our view, it takes a fully engaged workforce where every employee, no matter their position, feels valued and is empowered to think innovatively, work hard and make a difference. That’s how we’ve built a  business that fights to serve our customers, and that’s how ADS will continue to grow and succeed.”

Jordan Hall, who was hired to fill the new role of ADS’ first-ever Employee Engagement Manager, sees herself as a link between caring, professional growth, productivity and longevity. Already she’s orchestrated monthly yoga classes and CPR training sessions, “Lunch and Learns” centered around personal health and wellness, and scavenger hunts to help new new hires meet the team and learn about the company. Employees looking for a way to use that day off for volunteering can even attend a “Pick Your Purpose” volunteer fair event featuring local non-profit organizations.

“Professional people by their nature want to grow and learn and be helpful,” Hall said. “They want to feel appreciated and connected to the goals and values of the company they work for. I’m not a party planner. I’m not here to cater working lunches. I’m here to help create a vibrant workplace culture that engages and inspires our employees, and brings the company success. So everybody wins.”

That’s not to say there isn’t any fun, she added with a laugh. In addition to some unique team-building outings, there have been surprise pop-ups to celebrate the likes of National Waffle Day, National Wine Day and National Pizza Day, as well as vendor visits featuring happy hours, food trucks and games.

“It doesn’t have to be complicated. It doesn’t have to take a lot of time or money. It just has to show our employees that we see them working hard, we appreciate them and we care about their health, happiness and future,” Wallace said. “Innovation really can be that simple.”
